My attention was drawn by what the Leader said in his 1984 speech that he delivered before the Alumni Association of Postgraduate Studies when he said, By God, had it not been for my love for Damascus, I would have shaken the ground beneath their feet. Due to the impact of this statement on Syrias modern history, I referred to it in the home page of the website. At the same time, I am wondering about this great love the Leader feels for Syria, its land and people, which has prevented him from pulling the trigger at a time the use of arms was the most accurate option to achieve the objectives.

I also wondered what if the Leader, at the time, really shook the ground beneath the feet of the people he referred to. Were we to see another Syria that is different from the one we know today?

Perhaps some wonder about other things that may come across my mind later on, but now and before starting to look for answers to my queries, I find in myself a strong desire to go back in time, hoping to understand the domestic political conditions in Syria 25 years ago. It is true that the accounts we have heard and the articles we have read about such conditions are countless, but this information, due to its inconsistency, and sometimes complete contradiction, has lost its value and therefore it is unable to convince anyone except prejudiced people, as they read what matches their judgment and discard what contradicts it. Thus, the truth has been lost and we no longer understand anything, although we are talking about a recent time that has not become ancient history yet.

Well, let us turn the pages of the recent past together so that we can perhaps understand something. We are going to review together, with a scrutinizing eye, the most important statements and writings on that period of time. We will consider the speakers, i.e. the speakers and writers, witnesses to history and we will let the voice of reason make a judgment, as it is our only hope to distinguish the right opinion from the wrong one.

I say even to the prejudiced people that we call upon them to join us. It is certain that no one wishes to be fooled, so how is it that we are fooling ourselves?

At first, we will review what Major General Mustafa Tlas said in his book Three Months that Shook Syria in which His Excellency considered himself a witness to the political incidents of 1984. After that, I will examine what British writer Patrick Seale said in his book Assad: The Struggle for the Middle East, and then I may refer to statements made by other witnesses to that period of time.

Be on our side so that we attempt together to learn what happened so that we understand the present.

We will successively publish material very soon, God willing, and you will be able to read it on this link. Till we meet again!
